  • You don't need to be stealing Strava KOMs or racing to the front of your local group ride to enjoy cycle touring. You can ride at your own pace and travel steadily, slowing down to marvel at the scenery. We recommend riding to the pace of the slowest rider, waiting for each other on hilltops and vistas.

  • Yes, you can! E-bikes are a great way to enjoy cycle touring and feel fresh at the end of the day. If you are planning on using an e-bike please let us know as this will affect where you can stay and charge up your bike each night.

  • We don’t have rental gear but can help organize rental gear for you from one of the local gear rental companies on Vancouver Island.

  • There are some basics that you’ll need to bring with you on tour: a bike, a helmet and clothing. The rest will depend on what type of tour you wish to go on, if you want to go camping or if you prefer to stay in hotels. A detailed packing list will be sent to you in your complete tour package The packing list is broken down into essential items that are required for you to bring, recommended items that will make your tour better, and optional items that can you bring for additional comfort.   • Yes. By British Columbia law, helmets are mandatory for anyone riding on any road or cycle path. Everyone on a Derailed Adventures tour will be required to wear a helmet anytime they are riding their bicycle. Helmets must be no older than five years old to ensure they are structurally safe and still perform as designed. 

  • Vancouver Island has varying weather conditions, commonly seeing sun and rain on the same day. Daytime temperatures range from 15°C-25°C with nighttime temperatures dropping as low as 8°C during the summer. Rainfall is common and passes quickly.

  • If you would like to book a custom self-guided tour all you need to do is contact us via our custom tour form and we will reach out to have a video call to get more details and start creating your tour.

  • We can create a tour for any group size. Depending on accommodation availability and campground sizes, may affect where your group stays.

  • If your family would like to go on a cycle tour we can create a tour with whatever distances and accommodation that is appropriate. There are lots of exciting places and sights to see for the whole family.

  • Since our tours are self-guided you will need to fix any mechanical issues that occur or find a way to bicycle repair shop. It is recommended that you are able to change and patch a flat tire and lubricate your chain.

  • It is strongly recommended that you purchase travel insurance prior to joining any tour. Travel insurance protects you from any unforeseen costs that you can incur in the event of an accident or emergency. To read more, check out our terms and conditions here.

  • If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences let us know in the video call and we will add recommended restaurants and food stops in your tour package.
